Our Tribute to Stonewall

posted Monday, 29 June 2009

On Sunday, June 28, 2009, forty years to the night after the Stonewall Riots, The House of LeMay visited the Half Lounge where DJs Rob Douglas and Moonflower were hosting their weekly "Funhouse."  Just like in NYC that summer night an assortment of homosexuals were gathered to socialze.  Shortly after Amber and Maragaurite arrived, Officer Sandy Leechfield of the Beaver Pond Police Department, came through the door blowing her whistle.

Officer Leechfield had DJ Rob Douglas stop the music and ordered everyone to leave or they would be arrested.
Amber stopped Sandy and proceeded to tell the crowd the story of Stonewall and how fortunate we were for those brave actions just forty years ago... and to live in such a tolerant city as Burlington and the state of Vermont.  The House then sang our signature song, "Colorado."  You can see a video of a previous rendition HERE.
Afterwards, we just had fun...
It wasn't until the next day that we found out that the police action in NYC forty years ago was reenacted for real at the Rainbow Lounge in Fort Worth, Texas.  Police raided the bar and arrested people for public intoxication.  For the story, click HERE.

I remember the first time I ever saw Amber and Marguerite perform "Colorado". It was probably 12 years ago, I was 17 or 18, and working at Jeff's Maine Seafood in St. Albans. Jaime (my boss) asked me if I wanted to work a Sunday (which we usually have off). When he mentioned it was a benefit for Pride I decided to work. If memory serves, Yolanda and Cheri Tart were also there. Great night!
