Our Queens in Queens

posted Monday, 8 June 2009

On Saturday, June 6, Johnnie and Bob headed south with Amber and Lucy in tow.  Their mission?  To go to Queens to see and pick up Russell (the good friend and director/producer of Slingbacks & Syrup) and then go to New Paltz on Sunday for Hudson Valley Pride.  A whirlwind trip, for sure.

Upon arrival, Russell took them to not one, but two Beer Gardens!!  The first was Bohemian Hall at 2919 24th Street in Astoria.  According to their website...

The Bohemian Hall is a part of New York City history. It boasts the last original remaining Beer Garden in all New York City where once there were hundreds. Bohemian Hall is run and managed by the Bohemian Citizens Benevolent Society, a Fraternal organization dedicated to preserving this precious piece of history!

It's a cool place... over 300 people sitting outside at picnic tables playing board games, talking and... drinking beer!!  But, it's not the last... a new one opened up a few weeks ago at 35-33 36th St between 35th and 36th Aves,  where the pitchers of beer were $3 more - BUT they did have pitchers of Sangria!

They called up our friends Tom and Craig and they joined up... the last time we saw them they looked different...  It was at Drag Ball and they were Pissy Snow and Tawdry Hepburn.

And then they were getting hungry...
We know SOME of our friends would choose a place called "The Chicken Shack"... but not these boys.

And there was this place (right)...  Look how HUGE that picture is.  That scared and scarred'em.  So they went to a place called Locale.

The service (Liz!!) was great and the food... Johnnie LOVED his Faggotini (yes) Alla Barbabietola "Beggar's purse(!) shaped pasta stuffed with gorgonzola and walnuts in a red beet mascarpone."  And Bob inhaled his Tortellini Ai Quattro Formagi (meat tortellini in a bed of four cheeses).  Both dishes were just $14.50 each - fantastic!

After that Russell took Johnnie and Bob back to his place for a few vodka drinks (after the beers and sangria and dinner drinks) and then they went to one of the very few gay bars in Queens, Albatros.
Of course they had to get up on the stage.  They said it reminded them of a cross between the upstairs of Pearls combined with 3 Needs and Muddy Waters (all places in Burlington).

I have always heard about the Beer Garden - but have never been. Maybe because when I go out to Queens I'm either hungry for Arby's or Papis ... definitely not beer!

XOXOXOXOXOXO

Oh for heaven's sake, what is so special about a beer garden. We have plenty of those right here in Beaver Pond. Plus collecting those cans each morning out from between the fences, the dumpsters and the pea pod patches, gives the Little Beavers of Beaver Pond Troop 69 the cash they need for uniforms and pork jerky snacks.
