Oh, what is art? (Or - Is that Art?)

posted Wednesday, 4 November 2009

We LeMays try to support the arts - and try to understand what others perceive as art.  But, sometimes we just don't know.

Lucy's hair has been featured in TWO South End Art Hops (2007 and 2009) and she had her shoes exhibited at the Fleming Museum

Swiss artist Urs Fischer currently has an exhibit at the New Museum in NYC entitled "Marguerite de Ponty."  I don't know what that means.  But, the whole exhibit takes up over all three of the New Museum’s gallery floors to create a series of immersive installations and hallucinatory environments.  That's a lot of art!  But the one piece that people are talking about and is pictured on the museum's web page (but not made mention of) is this...

A recent article in New York had this to say about the show's opening back in October... Fischer's fans may have also been disappointed by a malfunctioning sculpture in the show. The work, a motion-activated replica of a human tongue called Noisette, is intended to result in a “mischievous slapstick routine” by popping out of a hole in the wall as visitors pass by. But it refused to emerge for extended stretches of time, resulting in visitors waving their arms or sticking their fingers in the hole to try to coax it out.
Been there done that.  To try to understand if this is really "art" I looked up some famous people's quotes on their definition of the word... as Arte Johnson would say, "Interesting, verrrrry interesting."

The essence of all beautiful art, all great art, is gratitude. Friedrich Nietzsche

The tongue can paint what the eye can't see. Chinese proverb

A great artist is always before his time or behind it.  George Edward Moore

All that I desire to point out is the general principle that life imitates art far more than art imitates life. Oscar Wilde

Art is not a thing; it is a way. Elbert Hubbard

Art is the proper task of life. Friedrich Nietzsche

By the work one knows the workman. Jean de La Fontaine

Every artist writes his own autobiography. Henry Ellis

In art as in love, instinct is enough. Anatole France

Modern art is what happens when painters stop looking at girls and persuade themselves that they have a better idea. John Ciardi

That's the motivation of an artist - to seek attention of some kind. James Taylor

The essence of all art is to have pleasure in giving pleasure. Dale Carnegie

The essence of all beautiful art, all great art, is gratitude. Friedrich Nietzsche

The more horrifying this world becomes, the more art becomes abstract. Ellen Key

Things are beautiful if you love them. Jean Anouilh

Yep, that's art!
