Burlington's Gayoral Election

posted Monday, 23 February 2009

With Town Meeting Day a week away (March 3), the four major candidates for the top spot in the Queen City are looking for ways to get those last couple of votes to make them the winner.  After countless debates, knocks on doors and even a chili cook-off there is no clear front-runner.  The League of Drag Queen Voters has a two-word piece of advice:  Go West.

Last year the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce declared that the new logo/image/brand of Burlington would be "The West Coast of New England."  And then a local attorney wanted to take it a bit further and declare, "Burlington, Vermont - The San Francisco of New England."

That, along with Sean Penn winning the Best Actor Academy Award for his performance as "the mayor of Castro Street," Harvey Milk, we're suggesting the candidates go all out for the gay vote.  And here's how we'd do it... Just like the Chamber... we'd rebrand them.

Below are the "looks" we've decided would be best suited for each candidate in going after the gay vote.

In all reports and accounts of the candidates - and their own self-assessments, current Mayor Bob Kiss (left) and Dem candidate Andy Montroll (not quite as left) are boring.  Nice guys, but b-o-r-i-n-g.  To go after the gay vote, they need to use what they have to their best advantage.   Mayor Kiss (webpage) should jump on the recent success of Drag Ball, the City's history of supporting gay/trans issues and come out - so to speak - as the Progessive (capital P) candidate that he is.

The leather look is a good one for Montroll (webpage).  His meek and mild manner doesn't jive with his stern control of the issues.  Those who have worked with him say he's very strong in his beliefs and has a strict command of the facts.  Some might say this is what we need in City Hall.
Republican Kurt Wright (left, above) (webpage) is the "good ol' boy" of the campaign, running for the deep-rooted townie vote.  This makes him the no-frills candidate, the sit-down-have-a-beer guy.  In gay parlance, he's a bear.

Independent Dan Smith (webpage) is the youngest candidate in the race.  We've chosen the young-professional-boy-next-door look for Dan.  He's the educated hard-working preppie that hits the dance floor on the weekend, inviting his friends over for a nice Sunday brunch.  And calls his mom twice a week.

The League of Drag Queen Voters urges you to vote on March 3 - or request an absentee ballot from your town clerk.   We don't endorse candidates, we just believe in our motto: "Don't Blow It- VOTE!!!"

Watch for us this Saturday at the Mardi Gras parade!!!

Won't these silly gays ever learn to take something seriously? As a gay man with absolutely no sense of humor, I'm shocked and appalled by this post. h ttp://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/blog/politics/2009/02/queen-citys-gay-vot e.html.
